How are you, 你好吗, 괜찮아요?
How can you ask someone this question in Turkish?
The answer is simple and can be learned from dictionary, easily. “Nasılsın?”
But when it comes to start reading basic texts, a form of this question might be confusing. This form is “Nasılsınız?”
What is the difference and how can you decide which one should be used?
The difference of “nasılsın?” and “nasılsınız?” is similar to the concept of “ Difference of Merhaba and Merhabalar” which is previously mentioned. Here 👇
But since meaning is different and this situation is also as confusing as previous subject, i will explain it in detail too.
Both forms have same meaning with a little difference, “Nasılsın?” is a single form that you can use while asking question to one person whereas “Nasılsınız?” is a plural form.
Imagine, you have an appointment with friends and just arrived meeting point, you see your friends have already arrived. You go closer to them and ask .., uhhmm, what? “Nasılsınız?”, right?
Correct!!!
They reply and now it is their turn to ask you, so they ask : “Nasılsın?”
So let’s go for some more details.
“Nasılsın?” is only used toward single person but “nasılsınız?” is not only used toward multiple people eventhough it is a plural form.
While talking to a person who you should be respectful to, again ,“Nasılsınız?” is used.
To conclude
| NASILSIN? | NASILSINIZ? |
| Single form | Plural form |
| It is used for asking a person | It is used for asking multiple people |
| Can also be used for asking a person, to be respectful |
